Sports Media Asia, one of the country’s foremost sports media group, introduces the SCORE Card, the INFINITE SPORTS LIFESTYLE CARD, the first ever discount and benefit card in the Philippines, designed solely for the promotion of sports and a healthy lifestyle. Just one of many sports-driven promotions of SMA that is dedicated towards promoting sports, the Filipino athletes, and an active, healthy lifestyle for every Filipino.

Check out the following video for a quick look at what it is:

What’s the SCORE?

The SCORE CARD is the ultimate sidekick of every sports enthusiast. Discounts on products and services will be available for all Cardholders that would assist them in their pursuit of athletic goals. They would also be given priority to participate or cross-train in various sports events affiliated and sponsored by SMA. And even non-sports enthusiasts will be able to take that first critical step in achieving a healthier lifestyle through sports.

The SCORE Card is a “carry anywhere” and “wear anytime” card that sportsmen and women will be proud to carry around. It WILL be the next biggest thing to hit sporty trendsetters in Manila and soon, the whole Philippines.

The Winning SCORE.

The SCORE Card is the SCORE that makes the difference in Philippine sports. In its continuous efforts to uplift and promote the sports in the country, a percentage of the proceeds from the SCORE Card sales will be allocated to the different partner sports communities to help their athletes in their fund raising activities for training and transportation needs.

SCORE Points.

Now, why would YOU want to SCORE?

Aside from benefits you get from accredited establishments, you would also be given priority to participate or cross-train in various sports events affiliated and sponsored by SMA. Every REGISTERED member is covered by a One (1) year Php 20,000.00 Accidental Medical reimbursement (injuries from sports related activities only)

The Global Mala Project is uniting yoga, service and collective action. The purpose of the project is to bring the global yoga community together from every continent, school and approach to form a “mala around the earth” through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 (108 Surya Namaskar, Mantra, Kriya, Meditation). These events will be happening simultaneously in over 100 cities including: New York, Munich, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hongkong, Tokyo, etc. Invitations are being made to studios, centers and ashrams all over the world including Root schools and centers in India from the Yoga Mandiram in Chennai to Amma’s ashram in Kerala. It is the largest unified worldwide yoga event, dedicated to positive change, in the history of the planet.

Show your support for a great cause:

Hi, my name is Christian Pobre. On July 4 2010, I will be running the Milo Marathon and in the process, I am hoping to raise funds to help as many charity patients in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) as possible.

You can help me raise money for PGH patients in one of two ways:

You can pledge a certain amount per kilometer I run. The full marathon is 42 kilometers. This means that if I complete the run, a pledge of P1 per kilometer will translate to P42 and a pledge of P100 per kilometer will translate to P4,200.

You can make a fixed donation, which will not depend on the distance I actually cover or how long it takes me to finish my run.

You can also be creative in coming up with you pledge or donation. In the past, a few donors have given bonuses when I beat my previous personal best. Or the fixed donation will given only if I complete the marathon. Donation amounts have also ranged from fifty pesos (P50) to ten thousand pesos (P10,000).

This will be the seventh time since 2003 that I am running a marathon for charity. I successfully completed the marathon from 2003 to 2006 and again last year, raising about P430,000 (about US$9,260). I managed to raise almost P80,000 last year but given that there is very little time left for me to collect pledges, I am hoping to raise P30,000 this year. All money will be used to help charity patients in the PGH who cannot afford to pay for the medicine or tests necessary to help them get better.

If you want to help, please send me an email at marathonforacause@yahoo.com.ph (or through my personal email – if you are my friend or if I have emailed you already, you can just use that address).

Thanks!

For cycling enthusiasts, the following resources provide a great place to discover bike routes which have been created by fellow enthusiasts. If you’re into creating and sharing walking or biking maps, you might want to check out Google’s My Maps service (video tutorial at the end) and see what you can come up with.

Map my Ride Manila
Map My Ride is a free map service where you can find bike trail around the city. You can also plot your own trail and share it with friends.

OpenCyleMap
A free editable cycle map of the world. Featured below is a bike trail in Marikina City.

Google Maps
Biking directions are currently available in US cities only but the good news for those of us here in the Philippines is that we can create our own trails and interactive maps. Just follow the video below:

One of the most fun boxing experiences I’ve ever had (including real world boxing) was playing Punch-Out!! at home on my Nintendo Wii.

Grab a Wii Remote controller in one hand and a Nunchuk controller in the other and step back into the ring with a modern update, more opponents, and the complete Wii experience of the classic Punch-Out!!

Players will find familiar names like Glass Joe, King Hippo and trainer Doc Louis. These boxers come to life again in cel-shaded 3-D, complete with hilarious fighting animations and back stories that capture all the fun and flair of the original Punch-Out!! games. The motion-sensitive controls of the Wii console mean that when players throw punches, Little Mac throws punches as well. Additionally, you can control hooks and jabs by combining motion control with control-stick movement. The motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn real-life swings into on-screen punches, so anyone can play.

Now here’s where it get’s interesting. Once you get the hang of the controls and start getting into a nice rhythm, you’ll really start to feel that your actually in the ring boxing with your opponent (minus the pain when you get hit) and after about half an hour you feel yourself start to sweat after throwing a hundred or so punches.

After an hour, you’ll soon notice your arms begin to tire (if they haven’t already) and you’re dripping in sweat. To really get into it (there’s an option to add the balance board for more interactivity but I say it isn’t needed), try ducking or dodging your opponents blows as if you were really in the fight with him. For those who are getting into boxing for the first time through this game, be warned, you’re in for an intense workout and an extremely enjoyable experience.

Check out the video below to see how the game looks.

Learn how to surf anytime, any day from certified surfing instructors as the country’s biggest wave pool opens to the public.

Mechanically imitating a variety of breaks of natural surf spots, OceanWaves at Club Manila East on Km 24 Manila East Road, Taytay, Rizal, is the first and only kind in the Philippines to consistently produce reliable rollers akin to the real thing.

The size of more than 10 basketball courts, OceanWaves holds two million gallons of water with programmable breaks simulating powerful ocean waves of up to 1.5 metres high. Waves roll up on demand in different shapes, heights and intensities.

“Because we use fresh water, you have to work harder to catch a wave. The water is not as buoyant as the ocean, so you will improve a lot faster. Once you get into the ocean, things will become easier,” said Darryl Buckley, certified instructor from Philippine Surfing Academy (PSA), the first and only surfing school in the country accredited by the Academy of Surfing Instructors in Australia.

PSA is the only institute exclusively contracted by Club Manila East to conduct surfing lessons and monitor surfing activities in the facility. Since operating in April last year, PSA has taught and trained over 1,000 people how to surf.

These are people who actually come back to learn some more, said Buckley, unlike those encountered in the ocean who mainly try to surf so they could scratch it off their to-do list.

Good idea

Buckley, who has been surfing since 1964 and working as a professional instructor since 1991, said experiencing how waves break gives students a good idea of what to expect in the ocean. They learn how to read waves and how to make the break work in their favour.

“You have to paddle out and deal with the water and your momentum. You need to catch that wave and ride it quickly. Believe me, learning how to pop up (stand on the board) is the easiest part of the course,” he said.

One of the biggest advantages of having a surfing pool in the city is accessibility. What might take students years to perfect in the ocean, he or she can learn at OceanWaves in a matter of months. Consistency is a key factor.

Paolo Soler, owner-founder-instructor of the PSA who first tried surfing in La Union in 1997, said it took him about three years to confidently learn how to surf. Still in school at the time, he only traveled to La Union about five times a year and surfed an average of three days when he got there.

Surfers wait for good conditions such as wave heights, waves with reasonable power and good wind conditions. Ideally, wind conditions must be offshore, blowing from the beach out to the sea so that the waves break slowly and evenly.

“You travel far, spend a lot of money and once you get there you don’t have any guarantee of catching a good wave. On a perfect day you’d catch a wave every 10 seconds, but normally you wait for minutes,” Soler said.

At OceanWaves, waves are generated every two seconds or less, so students learn how to surf so much faster. “Hey, even if I live in Manila I can surf every day,” he added.

Course

A surfing course starts with a 45-minute lecture on safety: how to handle the surf board, carry it properly, bring it to the water, how to use the board, use strokes properly, how to pop up, paddle, ride, and get off the board.

PSA also teaches the golden rule in surfing: Always pay attention to the waves. Collision is one of the risks in surfing–either with another surfer or with your own board.

Surfing works every muscle in the body, Buckley said, and while it is an advantage if a student starts off already physically fit, anyone can learn how to surf and work on one’s strength along the way.

“You build your muscle strength here, because surfing is 90-per-cent paddling. And that’s like using muscles you never thought you had. But the beauty about surfing is, it never feels like a workout. You’re out there to have fun,” Soler said.

OceanWaves also has a 14-ft-deep diving pool with four diving platforms and a 20-ft-high waterfall; and a 30-m wide, 76-m long family wave pool that’s only 4 ft deep. It’s open every day with two-hour surfing lessons scheduled at 8-10am, 10am-12 noon and 2-4pm. Surfing lessons are scheduled on appointment-only basis. Call 6312805 or 3575452.
