The triathlon is one of the most grueling tests of physical endurance that an athlete can possibly go through. The Ironman, the world’s most popular triathlon event, consisting of a combination of swimming, biking, and running is coming to the Philippines.
A triathlon is a multi-sport endurance event consisting of swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall course completion time, including timed “transitions” between the individual swim, bike, and run components.
From the Ironman Philippines website:
The inaugural Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines, formally launched April 23 at the New World Renaissance Hotel, brings the sport to local shores and puts the country on the map as a prestigious triathlon destination.
“We had three goals in holding this event,” said Alaska Milk Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, Jr. “First, we want to create a memorable experience for the triathletes. While the Philippines has not been seen as a major destination for triathlon, we offer a beautiful country with some of the most hospitable people in the world.”
A triathlete himself Uytengsu explained that the event is geared towards developing sports tourism in the country. This means attracting foreign athletes to come to the Philippines not only to participate in the race but to also spend time as tourists visiting the country’s local attractions.
